The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4740 ($299.99) is a stronger variant of this Editors' Choice WF-4720, a business-centric inkjet all-in-one (AIO) printer. For the difference in price (about $100), you also receive double the paper input capacity, a bigger automatic document feeder (ADF) that supports two-sided scanning, and also a bigger color touch display. Like its less-expensive sibling, it prints nicely and fast, and includes a large variety of connectivity choices.
Lean and Mean
In 13 by 16.7 by 19.8 inches (HWD) and 26 pounds, the WF-4740 is considerably taller and longer from front to rear than the WF-4720 and weighs approximately 6 pounds over the WF-4720. It must still fit comfortably on most computers that are large. It's also close in size and weight into the Canon MB2720 and its more expensive sibling, the more MB5420, however, considerably smaller and lighter than the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740, a comparably priced and rated AIO that prints, scans, and faxes tabloid-size (11 by 17 inches) pages.
Even the WF-4720's paper capacity is 500 sheets, so divide between two cassettes, just like the other machines mentioned here, except that the WF-4720, that comes with only one 250-sheet drawer. In addition, the WF-4740's greatest monthly duty cycle is 30,000 pages (with a recommended monthly volume of 1,500 pages), which will be on par with the majority of its competition.
You manually configure the WF-4740, print from or scan to the cloud or a USB thumb drive (the vent is located on the left-front facet of the lid, under a protective cap ), and execute different walkup tasks, such as making copies and sending faxes, from a 4.3-inch color touch display. Aside from the Power button, then this screen comprises the entire control panel.
All Link Options Covered
Connectivity features consist of Wi-Fi, Ethernet, linking to one PC through USB, Wi-Fi Direct, along with NFC (near-field communicating ). Those last two will be peer reviewed connections that allow you to access the printer without it or your cellular device being a part of a network. Neither the Canon MB2720 nor the MB5420 support either Wi-Fi Direct or even NFC, and the HP 7740 supports only Wi-Fi Direct. The bigger WorkForce AIO, the WF-4720, affirms .
Powered to Execute
A comparatively new printhead technologies, PrecisionCore--depending on the number of chips on the printhead--is much faster than conventional inkjet printheads. In this case, considerably quicker. Epson speeds the WF-4740 at 24 pages per minute (ppm) for black pages and 22ppm for pages.
When printing our 12-page black-text Microsoft Word text document, it churned at the speed of 27.3ppm (along with a first-page-out time of 9 seconds), especially faster than Epson's evaluation.
Because most printers do, when we combined with the score from printing the aforementioned text document with the results of printing our more complex PDFs, Excel, and PowerPoint files containing color, graphics, and photos, the WF-4720's score dropped to 15.1ppm. That is 1ppm quicker than its younger sibling, but significantly faster (by at 5ppm) compared to other models mentioned here.
The WF-4740 published our test snapshots in a mean of 12 seconds each. The WF-4720 outpaced it by four seconds, however another AIOs dealt with in this section were more than 20 seconds slower.
Performance Beyond Laser
Epson's most current motto,"Performance Beyond Laser" for WorkForce Guru AIOs, isn't (as we've already seen from how fast that the WF-4740 prints) away. And it is also not a matter when describing printing quality. (Each of the printers mentioned here print very well, with relatively insignificant or hardly noticeable occasional defects.) As most PrecisionCore printers perform, this one also prints well-shaped and extremely legible text on par with lots of its own laser sockets, which makes its text output acceptable for most business situations, except, perhaps, for documents containing very small type.
Graphics quality, too, is also exceptional: Color hairlines (rules 1 point and below ) come out even and unbroken; darkish fills are strong, without any evidence of banding; along with gradients, even the darker ones, stream smoothly with no noticeable stepping from 1 color to the next. We did see some very minor banding in a number of our darker evaluation gradients, however they needed scrutiny to locate it. Colours and tints were true and nicely delineated, too.
The WF-4740 additionally published photographs well, with great detail, accurate and vibrant colours, and no noticeable graininess. We saw some small lack of detail in bright areas, but not enough to mar the quality of the picture.
Irregular Running Prices
Even the WF-4740's working costs of 1.9 cents per black page and 8.2 cents per colour page aren't bad, but among the AIOs discussed so far, the HP 7740 has, in 8.1 cents, a lower color cost per page, along with the Canon MB5420, in 1.5 cents per black page and 7.1 cents per color page, are lower yet.
Because, however, the recommended annual volume for the majority of these machines is currently under 2,000 webpages, a .04-cent difference in per-page costs should not break your bank. If you published around 1,500 pages every month, it would run you about $6 a month, and that does not look like a great deal to pay for the exceptional output quality, quicker printing, and robust feature-set of this WF-4640.
More for the Money
With the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4740, you receive quick printing, reasonable operating costs, an auto-duplexing ADF, and a wealth of mobile connectivity features. In comparison with other AIOs such as the Canon MB5420 and the HP 7740, the WF-4740 provides a wider range of features and functionality for the price. (should you need flyer printing, scanning, and copying, however, you should consider that the HP model.) This makes it a simple pick as our new Editors' Choice for low-to-mid-volume AIOs in small or micro offices and workgroups.
