Epson ET-4550
Making up a simple characterization for Your Epson WorkForce ET-4550 EcoTank All-in-One Printer ($499.99) is a Struggle. On the one hand, it is a fairly typical office-centric multifunction printer (MFP), and a fantastic fit for personal use or light-duty shared usage in a micro workplace. On the flip side, it is expensive for that sort of printer. But as part of the EcoTank family, it is Epson's answer to anybody who has ever complained about the marketing model that gives the razors (browse: capsules ) to market the blades (read: ink).

Instead, it includes ink tanks across the face of your printer, and ships with bottles of ink, which you pour into the tanks. (More on that below.)

Along with the almost same characteristics, the 2 models provide similar performance. There is a big difference in price, with all the ET-4550 costing approximately twice as much. But unless you barely print at all, it'll be a lot less costly in the long run. The ET-4500 includes enough ink for 11,000 black webpages (should you use it as a substitute for a monochrome laser), or 8,500 color pages, then with both returns according to ISO/IEC normal evaluation webpages. To print the identical amount of pages using the Epson WF-2650, you'd have to purchase over $1,600 worth of ink cartridges. And that is not including the price of the printer.

Principles
In addition to Ethernet and USB, the Epson Workforce ET-4550 provides Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct as connection choices. Core MFP features include the capability to print and fax from, as well as scan , a PC, along with standalone copier and fax machine capacity.

Paper handling is restricted to a 150-sheet capability, which is what produces the printer most appropriate for individual use or light-duty usage as a common printer.

The ET-4550 provides service for mobile printing and scanning. Should you install it on a network, you can print and scan through the cloud, then using the Epson Connect support, to selected websites--such as Box, Dropbox, Evernote, and Google Drive--supposing, naturally, the network is connected to the net. You could also link to this printer by means of an access point to print scan or from to an iOS, Android, or Kindle Fire telephone or tablet computer.

If you join the ET-4550 to a single PC through USB cable rather than to a network, you are going to forgo the ability to publish scan or through to the cloud. However, you'll still have the ability to utilize Wi-Fi Direct to connect straight to the printer in your mobile device to scan and print.

Setup
In 16 pounds 5 ounces, the ET-4550 is light enough for one person to maneuver into position easily. In addition, it is small enough, at 9.5 by 20.3 by 22 inches (HWD), to easily share a desk with. Installation is normal except for your own ink, needless to say.

The ink comes in eight bottles, together with just two for every colour. Both black ink bottles hold 140 milliliters (ml) of ink. Each of the other ink colours comes in one 70ml bottle labeled Initial and a single 40ml bottle labeled Bonus. The rated return of 11,000 monochrome or 8,500 colour pages relies on using eight bottles.

The left side of the printer involves a range of ink tanks, with a cover on top and translucent sides that let you see how much ink is left in each tank. To fill every one, you first prepare the right ink bottle by removing the surface, peeling off a seal, replacing the very top, and breaking off the tip from the neck of this bottle. You then open the hood, remove a rubber cover in the container, and then carefully insert the surface of the bottle's neck into the opening onto the tank.

Both don't join or dock in any way, but you will find extensions sticking out along the neck of this jar. That lets you place it just a bit to the tank opening to make sure that you don't slip off the opening and spill any inkwhile keeping you from placing the jar in a lot. The neck can also be narrow enough that you have to compress the jar to force the ink out, instead of actually pour this, and you need to squeeze several times to empty the jar.

This is usually well explained in the installation guide, although there are a few odd instructions also, including"don't drink the ink" (Really.) There are also lots of warnings about not spilling ink, and directions for how to handle it if you do, including a cynical,"If ink gets on your clothing or possessions, it may not come off."

To prevent any problems, I made a point of positioning the printer nicely back in the edge of the desk, so I wasn't very likely to spill anything on the floor. Additionally, I place the printer onto a paper towel sitting along with a plastic bag, and wore latex gloves on both hands. I managed to not get any ink onto the paper towel, but I can't say the exact same for the glasses. If you don't have any convenient, you are well advised to get some before you put in the printer.

The great news, obviously, is that when you fill out the tanks, you can print thousands of pages until you have to fill them again with the next set of bottles and then publish still more pages before you will need to buy ink. Even once you do, then it won't cost a great deal for the next set. The cost on Epson's site for a 140-ml jar of black ink using a 6,000-page return is just $19.49.

Speed, and Output Quality
For my tests, I connected the printer into a network by Ethernet and set up on the drivers and other applications on a platform running Windows Vista. Not surprisingly, because both are basically the identical printer, making it connected with the Epson WF-2650, both to its overall speed and--except for a 1-second difference on a single file --for each individual document in our tests. However, both are slower compared to Brother MFC-J470DW, and that's our Editors' Choice reasonably priced color inkjet MFP aimed at a small or home office.

Output standard for the Epson Workforce ET-4500 is a little better than many inkjet MFPs total, falling in the high end of the range that includes most versions for text output, as the bottom of the equal --although smaller--scope for graphics, and at the upper tier for photographs.

That makes the text easily good enough for almost any business use, as long as you do not have an unusual need for smaller fonts or need the degree of quality you would desire , say, a resumé. Pictures, likewise, are more than sufficient for any internal company usage.

Photo quality is better than most drugstore prints. But if you expect photos to have a glossy finish, you may not enjoy the matte look of the Premium Presentation Paper Matte that Epson urges for photographs.

Conclusion
Surely the strongest argument for the ET-4550 is the low ink cost. However, by turning the marketing paradigm of low-price printers with high ink costs on the mind, Epson has also introduced a bit of sticker shock for the printer .

One approach to check out the pricing is that, depending on the cost of additional ink, the first price works out to $415 to the printer and $85 for the included ink. But that still creates the ET-4550 over three times as costly as the Epson WF-2650. A more useful approach is to take a look at the whole cost of ownership as part of your purchasing decision, and calculate some rough approximation of how much any given competing printer will probably cost in the long run.

You should have a great idea of the number of pages you publish in a typical week. Multiply that by 50 to get the number of pages that you publish in a year, then do the math to figure out how quickly the ink cartridges you'll be buying and also the initial cost of this printer will add up to $500 or more. That is the only real point. Should you typically maintain your printers longer than this before substituting themthe ET-4550 will save you money. If you don't print that , it won't. It is that easy.

Should you want an MFP for private or light-duty shared use, don't print enough for the Epson WorkForce ET-4550 EcoTank All-in-One Printer to conserve money over its lifetime--or conserve enough to matter--consider the Epson WF-2650 or even the Brother MFC-J470DW due to their lower first cost and overall cost of ownership. You also ought to consider them should you will need a printer that you can repeatedly proceed to and from a dorm area, say, without even worrying about spilling ink. For those who print enough to the ET-4550's low cost to thing, it can be a good fit for private or light-duty shared usage, with its overall cost of ownership making it an exceptionally appealing choice.
