Given the low price point and its desk-friendly layout, this multifunction printer's capability to turn out A3-sized prints comes as a nice surprise. It's certainly a reason to pick the HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 over the myriad A4 inkjet all-in-ones on the market, particularly because it includes each of the key features we have come to anticipate.

Being a four-in-one, it can publish, copy, fax and scan, but in addition, it provides wireless printing via your Wi-Fi system, or by Wi-fi Direct and boasts a 35-page automatic document feed (ADF) and 250-page paper tray. HP's companion program makes operation from a mobile device simple and you're able to print onto almost any sort of paper from envelopes, to glossy photo paper and tabloid pages. It can also print on each side of the webpage, though it can not do this with A3 newspaper, regrettably.

The most fascinating specification however, is the price. At $99 (Number 105, AU$137), HP's online shop costs less for the printer than it does to get a set of replacement ink, and it can be $139.92 (#107) for XL cartridges. The HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 costs half the price of the similarly specified Brother MFC-J5330DW and even less than the Epson WorkForce WF-7210DTW, and it is a print only device.

On paper, at leastit resembles an unbeatable bargain, however, we chose to find out for ourselves when some corners were cut.

Design
The HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 is rather larger than your normal A4 MPF, however, it hides its bulk behind panels of inoffensive off white and patterned gray plastic. This really is a machine targeted at the home office where looks are a thought and HP's designers have done well to give it a level of charm and fashion.

However, it is substantially wider compared to the Brother MFC-J5330DW, which likewise takes A3 paper, despite the fact that it's a kilo and half a lighter, and it develops substantially once you extend the drawer in order to load A3 paper. It is difficult to find out why it even needs to be so wide once the newspaper is filled from the front, narrow-side very first. To put it differently, this printer takes a whole desk, whereas the more sensibly equipped Brother will discuss it with a PC.

Lift the skillet along with also the US Letter-sized scanner mattress looks rather small and you can not help wondering why HP did not go the whole hog and make it A3-sized. When you start the flap under, the vacant space where the inkjets manoeuvre and the capsules are loaded, seems bigger than it needs to be.

Below this is the sole paper , which can carry hold 250 sheets of paper, or 50 cards, or 30 envelopes. Given the total bulk, it's a pity there isn't space for another paper , or , a greater capacity.

In addition to Wi-Fi connectivity, you can find vents at the rear to get an Ethernet cable along with a USB cable, but , there are no ports in the front in any way. Many photo printers provide an SD card slot, or at least somewhere to stick a USB flash drive.

There's at the very least a color touchscreen mounted on a tipping panel at the front which gives you fairly quick and responsive control of your printer. It is rather modest though at significantly less than 3-inches and typing your password to its tiny keyboard is a fiddly business.

At this cost, its no surprise that there is no NFC connectivity, or even a SD card slotor duplex scan. Some will no doubt find the lack of a front USB port bothersome also from today's standards, the touchscreen is not small.

Crucially, the HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 can print on both sides of the webpage, albeit using A4-sized newspaper only. In addition, it can print onto cards, envelopes, photo paper printing and etc onto A3 sheets isn't a mean feat. There's also a good app by HP which makes it easy to print and scan from your mobile device.

It scans and prints at a decent 1,200 x 1,200 DPI along with the quoted printing speed is quicker than many in 22ppm.
Ease of setup

It's a case of following the directions and pushing the cartridges into place when prompted. The only fiddly piece is typing from the Wi-Fi password using the little onscreen keyboard.

Performance
In use, the HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 printed immediately and oftentimes well, but it also proved somewhat frustrating to use and produced very mixed results.

Mono text documents are pushed out immediately, and noisily, and typically the kind is dark and crisp. On the other hand, the total amount of black ink employed is inconsistent, especially when printing after a lengthy break when the first page appears clearly lighter than the following.

Crop color documents and photographs appear more impressive, particularly when printing onto shiny A3 photo paper. Set all the parameters to optimal quality and the color in photographs appear vibrant and even-handed, without being lurid. Detail is sufficient too, but contrast is more unsatisfactory. Dark areas of a photo tend to appear less well defined than other inkjet printers can manage.

Our main problem, but was with reliability, that is possibly the most crucial point for your small organization. Our sample called for two of the ink cartridges to be reloaded at random intervals during the test. It is obviously a minor glitch, but the same machine had difficulties pulling A3 paper from the paper tray. We needed to push the paper through with our fingers until the rollers could find a grip and pull it into the printer. Again, this might be a one-in-a-million glitch, but taken together, it smacks of bad build quality.

Printing price
With HP Instant Ink, replacement cartridges are shipped to your door before you run outside, but HP doesn't supply the support with this particular model, so you are going to need to buy new cartridges if the bundled installation cartridges operate out. They ought to give you 625 colour webpages, or 1,000 mono.

Final verdict
The HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 looks rather bright, dressed in its own sculpted and plastic panels, and with the capacity to print on A3 paper it looks that a steal at the purchase price. HP is obviously a top manufacturer in the area, therefore after earnings attention is not an issue.

The companion app and a searchable touchscreen also allow it to be pleasant to use, but we still couldn't really suggest it for business use. Concerning constancy and dependability, which can be critical in a crowded office, the HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 performed badly. It might be cheap, but if a product wastes office hoursthen it's not a good investment.
