HP Officejet Pro 8630 e-All-in-One Printer

More costly than a laser inkjet printers (MFPs), for example, HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw Top Price at Amazonthis inkjet MFP is intended to go toe-to-toe with non invasive laser MFPs and come out on top. This very capable machine can be a great match in a little office that could make the most of the high paper capacity.

The HP Officejet Pro 8630 offers nearly any feature you can think of for the MFP. Its core capabilities include the ability to fax and print from, in addition to scan for, a PC, such as over a network, and work as a standalone copier, facsimile machine, and email sender. In addition, it can scan to, and publish from, a USB memory key, also it supports mobile printing too.

If you link it directly to a network by Ethernet or Wi-Fi, you can print it via a Wi-Fi access point in your network using AirPrint with iOS apparatus or HP's complimentary printing programs with iOS, Android, and BlackBerry devices. Assuming the network is connected to the web, you can even print through the cloud and take advantage of HP's Web apps. Even in the event that you don't connect it to a network, you may use the printer's Wireless Direct--HP's proprietary equal to Wi-Fi Direct--to link directly together, and print from, a smartphone or tablet computer.

The MFP also enables you to publish using near-field communication (NFC), however, the support is more limited than you may expect. The NFC Touch-to-Print feature in the HP Officejet Pro 8630 is a new standard. If you don't happen to have one, the printer's NFC service is futile.

The characteristic should become more useful over the years, as more portable devices come out that support the standard.

Paper Handling
The HP Officejet Pro 8630 creates tons of things to paper handling, beginning with its 500-sheet capacity, split in to two 250-sheet paper packs. If also provides an integrated printing duplexer (for printing on either side of a page) and, for scanning, both a legal-size flatbed plus a 50-page automated document feeder (ADF) that can duplex also.

Having the ability to both print and scan in duplex lets you replicate from single- and double-sided originals for a selection of single- or double-sided copies. You can also scan, fax, or email both simplex and duplex documents. Even better, the 4.3-inch front-panel colour display offers a specially well-designed menu to make it effortless to find and change settings.

In addition, it is a bit too large to share a desk with smoothly. Assuming you have space for it, however, setup is really straightforward.

Speed and Output Quality
For my tests, I connected the printer with its Ethernet interface and installed the drivers on a Windows Vista system.

That creates the HP Officejet Pro 8630 a lot faster than some low-cost colour laser MFPs. The HP M177FW, as an instance, managed just 2.9 ppm. On the other hand, it's not unusually fast to get a business-oriented inkjet. Both inkjet MFPs also did well for photograph speed, at 48 minutes for its 8630 and 50 minutes to its HP 276dw.

Output quality is best explained as easily good enough for company use, but not impressive. Text quality falls in the middle of the range that comprises the vast majority of inkjets, making it good enough for most business use, unless you have an unusual demand for small fonts.

Graphics quality is similarly great enough for most business usage, but at the low end of the tight array where many inkjets fall. Unless you are a perfectionist, the grade is great enough to PowerPoint handouts and such. Pictures in my evaluations were regular for an inkjet, making them easily a game for pharmacy prints.

Should you want better output quality, you're going to want to have a look at this HP Officejet Pro 276dw MFP. It not only offers better looking output, especially for text, but it also matches the HP Officejet Pro 8630 e-All-in-One's speed and its support for its PCL printing language, while also adding Postscript, which is essential in a few offices. Having said that, if you do not want the extras which make the HP 276dw our Editors' Choice, and your print needs are heavy enough to make good usage of a 500-sheet newspaper capability, the HP Officejet Pro 8630 e-All-in-One can be an fantastic fit, and may be the better MFP for your requirements.
