The Epson WorkForce ES-400 Duplex Document Scanner ($349) is a streamlined, inexpensive record scanner for personal or small-office use. In our testing, it revealed very great pace, even beating the Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula DR-C225 by a hair. The ES-400 is not as well-rounded, though, as its OCR functionality is unimpressive. Nonetheless, it is an excellent value in a simple desktop computer scanner, especially if you scan mainly to picture PDF or searchable PDF formats.
Design and Characteristics
Even the matte-black ES-400 is streamlined in 6.9 by 11.6 by 6.6 inches (HWD), and needs to be easy to find room for on a dining table. It is lightweight for a record scanner in just 8.1 pounds. The top cover opens to develop into a input , and another tray slides forwards from the scanner's lower front to turn into an output tray. Extending the trays adds to a foot to the thickness. 1 thing to note with all the input menu is to make sure that the manuals are put into the proper width for the document you are using. Edges of several sheets frayed during a couple of my scans, even though this stopped once I took special care in aligning the paper against the manuals.
It can serve only as well as a private document scanner.
Setup and Software
Installation is typical of the USB-connected scanners. You plug in the power cable, download the software from Epson's service page to your own ES-400--it does not include a disk --and connect with the supplied USB 3.0 cable for your PC. (In case your computer does not support USB 3.0, then the cable works with USB 2.0 as well.)
Software comprises two scanning utilities (Epson Scan and Document Capture Guru ), a business-card-management application (NewSoft Presto! ) BizCard), along with an OCR program (Abbyy FineReader Sprint). A TWAIN driver lets you scan from many Windows programs that include a scan control.
Document Capture Pro is a little more sophisticated than the fundamental Epson Scan utility, and that I used it for most of my testing. It allows you to send scans into an assortment of destinations in a variety of formats. The destination options incorporate a folder on a drive, a printer, an FTP site, an email attachment, and cloud destinations such as an Internet Folder, also a SharePoint server, Evernote, DropBox, along with Google Drive. Supported file formats include PDF, searchable PDF, JPG, BMP, TIFF, Multi-TIFF, and PNG, DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX.
I tested the Epson WorkForce ES-400 over a USB 3.0 link to our own testbed, which conducts Window 10 Professional. I used the default option 200ppi resolution in speed testing. Scanning to image PDF format using Document Capture Guru, and time from the moment I gave the scan command to the moment the program finished writing the file to the hard disk, I booted the ES-400 at 33.3ppm for scanning from simplex (one-sided) manner, and also 62ipm for scanning in duplex. Subtracting the lag between giving the command along with the scanning actually starting, in addition to the lag between it ending and the document has been written to disc, gives a raw scan rate that is a bit faster than its rated speed, at 38.5ppm for simplex and 63.8ipm such as duplex.
For most document-management applications, the more significant speed is how long an scanner takes to scan and store to searchable PDF (sPDF) format. Even the Epson WorkForce ES-400 took 1 minute 3 minutes to save our 25-sheet, 50-image document to sPDF, only 15 minutes longer compared to the 47 minutes it took to scan it to image PDF. These times efficiently fit with the Epson DS-530 Color Duplex Document Scanner, and a small bit quicker compared to the Canon DR-C225, that is rated at 25ppm for simplex and 50ipm for duplex scanning, and at which each picture is 1 side of a webpage. The DR-C225 took 1 minute 2 seconds to scan to picture PDF and also 1:09 to searchable PDF. (In fairness to this DR-C225, once we tested it, it had been a USB 2.0 connection on our old, less effective testbed.) The Brother ImageCenter ADS-2000e took 1:02 to scan test file to image PDF and then 1:28 to scan it into sPDF.
The mix of this scanner and Document Capture Pro read our Times New Roman evaluation page to 12 points and also our Arial page down to 10 points, without a error and had more difficulty than normal with several of our nonstandard test fonts. Performance was slightly worse compared to the Epson DS-530, which deleted with no mistake down to 10 points with the two Times New Roman and Arial. The Canon DR-C225 easily outperformed the Epson WorkForce ES-400 from OCR accuracy, reading our samples for Times New Roman and Arial at sizes as small as 6 points with no mistake, and handled our nonstandard fonts fairly well.
In business-card scan, the Epson WorkForce ES-400 fared well. Even though most cards in our evaluation suite had at least one error, few had over two or three. It scanned small stacks of business cards easily.
As a desktop document scanner for personal or small-business usage, the Epson WorkForce ES-400 Duplex Document Scanner delivers superb rate for its price, slightly faster even than the somewhat more expensive Editors' Choice Canon DR-C225 in scanning to PDF (both picture and searchable). Even the DR-C225 remains our Editors' Choice as it showed much stronger OCR functionality in our testing, and is now a much better option if you need to scan to DOCX format. If you're fine with PDF, however, with the Epson WorkForce ES-400 you receive a fast scanner at a very affordable price.
