HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 Printer Review - Free Download Driver

Clearly intended for office use, the HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer ($399.99) is among the more elite inkjet multifunction printers (MFPs)accessible. It offers a level of speed, paper handling, and features which are more often found in colour laser MFPs than in inkjets. And similar to most colour laser MFPs, it's big enough that you won't want it sitting on your desk.

There are not many inkjets in the same class because the OfficeJet Pro 8740. Among the few that qualifies is the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690, which our Editors' Choice inkjet MFP for up to heavy use use in a little office. Between them both, the Epson model was significantly quicker on our tests and printed higher-quality text outputsignal two important features that keep it firmly in position as our top choice. On the other hand, the OfficeJet Pro 8740 turned in higher-quality images output on our tests. In addition, it offers a greater paper capacity for a similarly priced arrangement.

The Epson WF-5690 includes a 250-sheet rear drawer, an 80-sheet rear tray, and duplexer conventional. The OfficeJet Pro 8740, in contrast, comes with two 250-sheet drawers and a duplexer standard for exactly the same price. On the flip side, the Epson printer offers a 2nd 250-sheet tray as an option, giving it a slightly higher max capability should you add the optional additional tray.

The Basics and More
Basic MFP features for the OfficeJet Pro 8740 contain the capability to print and facsimile, in addition to scan to, a PC; work as a standalone copier and fax machine; and both print scan and from into your USB memory key. The 4.3-inch color touch screen offers an easy-to-use pair of menus for providing commands and also the option to customize it somewhat.

Should you connect the printer to a network, either using either wirelessly or Wi-Fi, then you can print it through the cloud or connect to it through an access point on the system to print scan or from to iOS along with Android phones and tablet computers. You might even use the front-panel touch screen to make the most of HP Print Apps to publish from various cloud websites.

If you choose to connect to one PC through USB cable rather, you will not be able to print through the cloud or use the Print Programs. On the other hand, the printer Wi-Fi Direct will nonetheless let you connect directly from cellular devices to print and scan. If your phone or tablet offers NFC, then you may also set the Wi-Fi Direct connection by simply tapping on the device to the NFC emblem on the MFP's control panel.

For scanning, the OfficeJet Pro 8740 provides better paper handling than most small-office MFPs, with a legal-size, as opposed to letter-size, flatbed, along with a 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) up to legal-size paper. Better still, the OfficeJet Pro 8740 provides accurate duplex scan, instead of restricting you to simplex scanning, or even a duplexing ADF, which requires the slower approach of scanning one side, turning over the page, also scanning the second side. Like many MFPs that can both scan and print in duplex, the OfficeJet Pro 8740 allows you to copy both simplex and duplex originals to your selection of simplex or duplex graphs.

Installation, Rate, and Output Quality
The OfficeJet Pro 8740 measures 19.7 from 20.9 by 16.2 inches (HWD) and weighs only 40.6 lbs. Installation is normal. For my tests I've attached it to a system with its Ethernet interface and then installed the drivers and software on a platform running Windows Vista.

On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), the 8740 arrived in at 6.3 pages per minute (ppm). That really makes it faster than many color laser MFPs in exactly the exact same price range. However, the Epson WF-5690 was significantly faster than any of those additional printers, at 10.1ppm, which puts the OfficeJet Pro 8740's speed in the selection of commendable, as opposed to impressive.

Output quality is a bit of a mixed bag, however more of a plus than a minus overall. Text quality is in the top end of this range that includes the vast majority of inkjets, with exceptionally readable text even at 5 and 6 points for most of our test fonts. As long as you do not desire even smaller fonts, then you shouldn't have some complaints. Unlike laser outcome, however, the ink can smudge only a bit in case it gets wet, which makes the text more difficult to read.

Graphics output on our tests was a solid step over the caliber most inkjets offer. I found several subtle banding in certain sound fills. However, the quality was still good enough I would not hesitate to offer you the output to an important customer I had been attempting to impress with my professionalism. If you're a part of a perfectionist for this a slight flaw to bother you, then it is possible to switch into a higher-quality mode, although printing will take longer. Photos in my tests were well inside the range you would expect for typical drugstore prints, that is a whole lot better than most lasers can manage.

Conclusion
Having said that , the OfficeJet Pro 8740 delivers better graphics quality than the Epson model, faster speed than either laser printer, and better text quality compared to many inkjets, which makes it a powerful choice and well worth a close look.
